The Walt Whitman Theatre under construction.

Notice the massive cross beams in the ceiling which branch out from the center.   A false or "hang" ceiling (which consists of  layers of cement and plaster only three inches thick poured over wire mesh) is secured to the lattice that hangs from the beams.  There is actually another full two stories above the hang ceiling.  Between the roof and the false ceiling are the large air condition and heating ducts, three cove openings that house the theatrical lighting instruments as well as a series of walk-ways or "cat walks" that the technicians use to move from various locations within the ceiling....all this activity going on above the patrons' heads!

The speaker loft is the large room, the skeleton of which can be seen near the top of the photo.  This room now  houses the large speakers that are part of the house sound system.  Our sound system consists of  four main clusters  --  a number of speaker cabinets or "bins" giving voice to Left, Center, Right and Subbass channels.

At the very top of the picture in the foreground, can be seen the poured concrete slabs which will become the Balcony floor, overhanging the Mezzanine.
