The Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music Presents

Brooklyn College Opera Theater

Leos Janąĉek's

The Cunning Little Vixen
Richard Barrett, director

This opera came late in Janacek's life - he was 71 when be began the undertaking -- a story of unrequited love.  Although the libretto is based on a comic story by Těsnohlķdek, it reflects a love Leos had for the much younger and married Kamila Stösslovį.  In the opera, Leos transforms himself into the Forester and Kamila into the Vixen.  Janąĉek uses the cast of animals so that the opera is heavily aligorical, touching on very adult themes of longing for freedom, even feminism, and murder.

The original story was published as a serialized novella and was much more comic in nature, whereas Janąĉek's opera is much more philosophical and brooding and he reflects on the eternal questions of the circle of life, love and death, as is the wont of an artist of his age.

The Brooklyn College Theater Department Presents

Spain

By Jim Knable
Directed by Ava Geffen

Spain tells the story of a recently divorced young woman who deals with her abandonment in an innovative way: she dreams up a sixteenth-century Spanish conquistador and, through him, is able to find passion, vengeance, and peace that she never knew she had. The play, which premiered at The Woolly Mammoth Theatre in 2006, and was described by The Washington Post as bearing "great similarities to Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz in its rendering of a bizarre dreamscape where truth lies hidden in the madness."

Jim Knable, a self-proclaimed Troubadour Playwright, has been produced at theaters throughout the country, including Manhattan Class Company, Soho Rep, New Jersey Rep, Playwrights Theatre of New Jersey, Phoenix Theatre of Indianapolis, The Hangar Theatre, Actor's Express in Atlanta, NYU, Yale University and New York's Summer Play Festival.

The Prep Center offers classes in music, theater, and dance. Our programs are for children beginning at age three and a half and for adults. We offer hands on, skills based education to enable our students to fully develop their talents. Our professional faculty are experienced teachers who are dedicated to letting each student explore their chosen field, while teaching them the technical skills that help to hone the individual's performance ability.

The hours of study, practice and dedication to their instrument is realized in these much anticipated Student Recitals, where the young performer can put forth their talent in front of an appreciative and many times amazed audience.
