Folk Feet
Ritual and Ceremonial Dance Traditions
of Brooklyn
The
6th Annual BAC Dance Showcase
For the past six years, the Brooklyn
Arts Council (BAC) has presented a FREE
showcase highlighting Brooklyn's
traditional dances and dancers.
This year's Folk Feet dance
showcase is part of Brooklyn Arts
Council's year long project Days
of the Dead in Brooklyn: Diverse
Traditions of Mourning and Remembrance.
This year's fascinating theme is ritual
and ceremonial dance traditions,
featuring social dances associated with
weddings, funerals, religious beliefs,
and national or ethnic identification.
Some of the dances to be featured
include those seen at Greek, Sherpa, and
Jewish Yemenite weddings, and those
performed at Trinidadian and Puerto
Rican Funerals.

The Brooklyn College
Conservatory of Music Presents
After The Silence:
The Art of Improvisation
Featuring Jenny
Lin and Elliot Sharp
Jenny Lin is one of
the most respected young pianists today,
admired for her adventurous programming
and charismatic stage presence. Her
ability to combine classical and
contemporary literature has brought her
to the attention of international
critics and audiences. She has been
acclaimed for her "remarkable technical
command" and "a gift for melodic flow"
by The New York Times. The Washington
Post praises "Lins confident fingers...
spectacular technique..." and Gramophone
Magazine has hailed her as "an
exceptionally sensitive pianist". Martha
Argerich wrote: "Miss Jenny Lin is a
very gifted young musician and a
brilliant pianist ."
A familiar face in New York's downtown
music scene for almost three decades,
the Ober-eclectic Elliott Sharp has
released nearly a hundred albums,
ranging from suites of solo-acoustic
guitar improvisations to full-scale
orchestral works. Sharp studied with
master composers such as Benjamin Boretz,
Roswell Rudd, Lejaren Hiller,
and Morton Feldman while attending
Cornell, Bard College, and the
University of Buffalo, but he
simultaneously indulged his fascination
with physics and other sciences-which
arguably affected his artistic aesthetic
as much as his formal compositional
studies. Sharp's "extreme science nerd"
bent has led to everything from building
his own effects pedals to extrapolating
guitar tunings from the Fibonacci series
of numbers to being an early-adopter of
computer-based composition and effects
processing.

The
Brooklyn College
Conservatory of Music
presents
Handel's
Radamisto
with the Brooklyn College Opera Theater
Richard Barrett, Director.
Radamisto is an opera in three acts
by George Frideric Handel to an Italian
libretto by Nicola Francesco Haym, based on
L'amor tirranico, o Zenobia by Domenico
Lalli and Zenobia by Matteo Noris. It was
Handel's first opera for the Royal Academy
of Music.
It was first performed at the King's
Theatre, London on 27 April 1720 and was
judged to be a success, resulting in 10
further performances. A revised version with
different singers was written for a revival
on 28 December 1720. More revisions followed
for yet another version presented in 1721
and again for further revival in 1728. It
was also given in Hamburg. The first modern
performance was in Göttingen on 27 June
1927.

The
Brooklyn College
Conservatory of Music
presents
After the Silence:
The Art of Improvisation
Featuring Kathleen Supové
Kathleen Supové is one of America's most
acclaimed and versatile contemporary music
pianists, known for continually redefining
what it means to be a
pianist/keyboardist/performance artist in
today's world. In addition to her compelling
virtuosity, she is also known for her
boundary-breaking ways of breaking the wall
between performer and audience. After
winning top prizes in the Gaudeamus
International Competition for Interpretation
of Contemporary Music, she began her career
as a guest artist at the prestigious
Darmstadt Festival in Germany. Since then,
Ms. Supové has presented solo concerts
entitled The Exploding Piano, in which she
has championed the music of countless
contemporary composers—minimalists,
postminimalists, and experimentalists.
She has appeared with The Lincoln Center
Festival, The Philip Glass Ensemble, Bang On
a Can Marathon, Music at the Anthology,
Composers' Collaborative, Inc., and at many
other venues, ranging from concert halls
such as Carnegie to theatrical spaces such
as The Kitchen to clubs such as The Knitting
Factory and The Cutting Room. She is
currently an artist-in-residence at
The Flea Theater in NYC, where she
regularly presents her newest Exploding
Piano concerts each season. Recently, she
was a featured performer in two prestigious
festivals: The Ussachevsky Memorial Festival
(Pomona College, Claremont, CA) and the NIME
Festival (New Interfaces for Musical
