The Brooklyn College Theater Department
Presents
Shirley Lauro's
A Piece of My Heart
Directed Lindsey Clinton
A Thesis Production
A Piece of My Heart
is a drama which centers on the impact
the Vietnam War has on six courageous
women -- a career Army woman, an
American Red Cross volunteer, a Navy
Nurse, two Army nurses, and an
entertainer -- and the men that surround
their lives. Told in flashback, the play
moves through a twenty year period from
the time they are sent to Vietnam until
they reunite for a ceremony at The Wall
in DC. An inspiring true story of these
six women struggling to make sense of
the war that irrevocably changed them
and the nation that shunned them.
A Piece of My Heart
is truly a visionary work with the music
and soul of a tumultuous period in our
history; there is no mistaking its
relevance and importance today.
"...Shirley Lauro's new play A Piece of
My Heart, is a catharsis as well as a coup
de theatre...There have been a number of plays
dealing with Vietnam...but none with the direct,
emotional impact of Ms. Lauro's work...(she) has
turned first hand impressions into a disturbing
drama that evokes empathy for survivors as
victims." --The New York Times

Present
Christopher Nolans's
The Dark Knight
Starring Christian Bale, Michael Caine,
Heath Ledger, Gary Oldman, Arron Eckhart,
Maggie Gyllenhaal and Morgan Freeman
Here on the Giant Screen and in
breathtaking 6 Channel Total Surround
MegaSound is the only way to experience
the impact of director Christopher
Nolan's critically acclaimed outing in
the Batman franchise,
THE DARK KNIGHT.
With remarkable performances by a
stellar cast including the late Heath
Ledger's Academy Award winning role as
the Joker (posthumously awarded), this
Batman is rich with subtleties and
emotional textures of the classic heroic
tragedy not found in other more banal
"superhero" efforts. One quickly
forgets that Batman started off as a
comic book given the powerful human
drama imbued in this film.
Much to
Nolan's credit, he is careful to insure that
while the film unleashes elaborate and quite
extraordinary special effects for which it
has garnered high praise, they do not
overwhelm or overshadow the powerful
performances and they human storyline --
something that is always a risk in a film of
this genre. Rt. 152m

The Brooklyn College
Conservatory of Music and
The Students of Thomas Cultice Presents
Dido and Aeneas
by Henry Purcell
Dido and
Aeneas is an opera in three acts
by the English Baroque composer Henry
Purcell and libretto by Tatum Nate. The
first known performance was in the
spring of 1689.
Based on the
fourth book of Virgil's Aeneid,
the story is of the legendary Queen Dido
of Carthage and the Trojan Aeneas, her
hero-lover. After Aeneas and his
crew fall on rampaging seas and are
shipwrecked in Carthage, he and the
queen are fated to cross paths and
become passionate lovers. But Fate
has other plans and rips them apart and
the tragedy unfolds. In despair, Dido
realizes she cannot live without him and
the only course left is to await death.
Dido and
Aeneas is a monumental operatic work
of the Baroque era, and it is Purcell's
(and perhaps England's) foremost
operatic works.
It
may be considered Purcell's only true
opera.
