Brooklyn Center
Cinema
in association with
The Brooklyn College Alumni Association
The Brooklyn College Institute for Retirees
in Pursuit of Education (IRPE)
Presents
A Robert Sarnoff Film
THE ROMEOWS
Retired Older Men Eating Out Wednesdays
The world is
changing. Older people are running
marathons, hooking up on match.com, flying
planes and safely ditching them in the
Hudson River. THE ROMEOWS,
Retired Older Men Eating Out Wednesdays
tackles the big, murky questions of
current-day American life. The film
follows a group of friends who graduated
from Brooklyn College together in 1959, as
they meet for dinner every Wednesday.
Five decades later, these monumental
“everymen” view the world with humor,
melancholy, and hope. Take a seat at
the table where this band of Brooklyn
buddies discusses everything from healthcare
to the demise of The Mets.
THE ROMEOWS is a testament to
the life-changing, life-giving power of
friendship, no matter your age. Theirs
has carried them through fifty years of
trials and victories. In an attempt to
locate these Brooklyn-accented
septuagenarians in the annuls of film, Mr.
Sarnoff says their generational take on life
“connects with No Country For Old Men and
Gran Torino, while repelling notions of
Grumpy Old Men and Bucket List. And as
one of THE ROMEOWS says, “You
finish seven decades of life on this planet,
it’s nice to see everyone alive, healthy and
here. It’s reassuring, it’s like
telling the grim reaper, “Ya know what, I’m
stronger than you right now, and when I got
my buddies, we’ll take you on at half-court,
or full court, and we’ll kick your ass! See
ya Wednesday.”
There will
be a Q&A after the screening with Mr.
Sarnoff and THE ROMEOWS
cast.

The Brooklyn
College Conservatory of Music Presents
After the Silence:
The Art Of Improvisation
Featuring The Michael Bisio Quartet
Michael Bisio, bass
Stephen Gauci, tenor sax
Avram Fefer, tenor & soprano saxes
Jay Rosen, percussion
When we think of the great bass players in
jazz, generative composer/leaders such as
Charles Mingus and Charlie Haden, a
distinctive approach and a distinctive sound
come to mind. That's what happens when you
mention the name of bassist, composer, and
leader Michael Bisio.
Bisio’s quartet, formed in January
2005 and made up of Avram Fefer and
Stephen Gauci on saxophones and
Jay Rosen on drums, reflects the
willingness of the band members to stick
together, which is “the glue that assures
that a ‘sound will come through.’” The
fundamental basis for their music is the
dynamic of the horns; Fefer and
Gauci require a stalwart, exacting
rhythm section to counteract the ebullient
sounds of their horns and that is exactly
what Bisio and Rosen provide.
