The Brooklyn College Department
of Theatre Presents
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's
Rough Magic
Directed by
Rose Bernett Bonczek
A Mainstage Production
Brooklyn
College’s Department of Theater will present
Marvel Comics and True Blood writer Roberto
Aguirre-Sacasa’s play Rough Magic.
Shakespeare meets Marvel Comics in this
fast-paced, contemporary story, as a
sorceress, who has hidden and denied her
powers, becomes compelled to enlist in a
heroic journey after a call to arms is made
by the people threatened by Prospero’s vow
to destroy ‘The New World.’ Set in both New
York City and on Prospero’s magical island,
Rough Magic is a funny fantastical
action-adventure, part hero’s journey, part
X-Men, part Stephen King, and the Greek
Furies tossed in.
“....
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s darkly funny
takeoff on
The Tempest
is a neat
little juggler’s trick, a shoutout to the
Bard, the theater business, and comic books
all at once; there’s a nod to the Greeks
here, a hat-tip to the Broadway musical
there, and shameless lifts from Shakespeare
left and right. Theater History 101, in
other words, gets sliced and diced and
slotted into an unrepentantly meta adventure
featuring a monstrous villain, his nasty
henchmen, and a team of motley misfits
scrambling to save the world—which is why,
if you’re gonna see just one Shakespeare in
Washington show, this brash little Cliffs
Notes (by way of the Justice League) survey
might as well be it."
