The Conservatory of Music of Brooklyn College Presents
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's
The Tsar's Bride
(Tsarskaya Nevesta )
Царская невеста
With
The
Brooklyn College Opera Theatre
Richard Milton Barrett, Conductor
Tsarskaya Nevesta (The Tsar's Bride)
is an opera in four acts by Nikolai
Rimsky-Korsakov, the composer's tenth opera.
The libretto, by Il’ya Tyumenev, is based on
the drama of the same name by Lev Mey.
This concert
version by the The Brooklyn College Opera
Theatre is not to be missed; This Rimsky-Korsakov's
seldom-performed Russian
masterpiece will be the first time it has ever
been performed on the Walt Whitman Theatre's Great
Stage and brought to life under Maestro
Barrett's able baton.
While the
opera is based on historical figures, they
play out a fictional and wildly dramatic
story of betrayal, intrigue, and corruption,
nothing that can't readily be found in
today's headlines, and evoking a dark and
threatening world with plenty of
contemporary resonance.
This is a fitting -- one might even say
thrilling -- work with which the
Conservatory opens its season of operatic
offerings and it is a rare opportunity to
enjoy this gem of an opera.

The
Brooklyn College Department of Theatre
Presents

Neil LaBute's
Reasons To Be Pretty
Directed by Adrian Wattenmaker
A Thesis Production
One word might be all it takes to tear a man
and a woman apart. Neil LaBute’s incendiary,
Tony-nominated play explores the minefields
of language, image, and relationships after
Greg is overheard comparing his girlfriend,
Steph, to a co-worker he admits is
“prettier.” In LaBute’s battlefields, no one
emerges unscathed.
"....
Reasons flows with the compelling
naturalness of overheard conversation.
It’s never easy to say what you mean, or to
know what you mean to begin with. With a
delicacy that belies its crude vocabulary,
Reasons To Be Pretty celebrates the
everyday heroism in the struggle to find
out."
